(warning: photos at end are slightly graphic, or at least disgusting).
if you've known me for any length of time, you probably know that bugs are not my friends. especially ones with a lot of legs (e.g., spiders).
this morning as i was getting ready for work, a fully grown house centipede decided to emerge from my closet and scurry across my floor. i am a little embarrassed to admit that i had a total girl moment and shrieked and jumped on my bed. the bug came to rest by my dresser. i stood for about two minutes on my bed, contemplating just leaving and going to work because i was almost going to be late and even if i killed this bug, there's never just one of them so i wouldn't really be doing any damage. however, i realized that i wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if i just let this one go back into hiding. i was half hoping my scream woke up either daphne or petek (eunice is away on business) and they could just come kill it for me. they didn't (both are very sound and currently very tired sleepers). sigh. looked like i was going to have to kill it myself.
i worked up the courage to step down from the bed, grab my hockey stick (because there was no way i was going to come any closer than three feet to that thing), and step up onto my desk chair. from my desk chair, i tried to crush the bug with the stick, but it was too fast and it scurried over to my bookshelf (i.e., towards me. GAAHHH.), slipping in between the bookshelf and a filing crate sitting in front of it. when it didn't come out from behind the crate, i blindly shoved the blade of my hockey stick in the gap where it was hiding, trying to get it to come out where i could see it. when it still didn't come out, i took a deep breath and reached to pull the crate away from the bookcase. it was just sitting there and didn't really seem to want to move--perhaps i had injured it? i took another deep breath and carefully brought the blade of the hockey stick down on it. this time, it didn't run away, and i successfully killed it. i didn't have time to clean it up though because i was late for work (i had a patient coming in at 8 who tends to come early to his appointments and it was already 7:40), so i just left it there. for the rest of the day i worried that i would come home to find five more bugs surrounding the dead one, mourning it or something. fortunately this didn't happen. i took pictures of it to document the adventure, vacuumed it up (with my eyes closed... i didn't want to see it "moving" again), and wiped the bug juice and detached leg from the floor.
I HATE BUGS. GAAAAAHHHHHHHHH.

if you had come home to 5 gathered centipedes mourning the body of their comrade... i would've loved to see a picture of that! (what a great captioning contest picture that'd make. :-) )

AHHHHH GROSSSSSSS. i just killed a bug yesterday, but it was nowhere as huge as yours.
i am very impressed.
ewwwwwww. i'm very thankful that i'm a very sound sleeper (not that i wouldn't have wanted to come to your rescue, but that would be an unpleasant wake up call).
oh beata. i'd like to delusionally believe that only one centipede exists in our house, and cindy just killed it.
